1. Missing Deadlines
Tick tock. Once the process begins, there are many deadlines – none of which you can afford to miss. You’ve got to keep track of processing dates, interview dates, renewal dates – and of course, keep a sharp eye on when your visa expires. You don’t want to be left both visa-less and green card-less. These dates are no joke. You can’t show up with a “my dog ate my homework note” signed by mommy or daddy and get out of this one. If you miss a deadline, it’s real. Missing an important deadline can not only lead to long, very long delays, but also a straight denial.
2. Eligibility Mistakes
So you think you’re eligible for a green card now, but you may not be. You don’t want to apply too early or too late. There’s a right time for everything, including green card applications.
3. Sponsor Mistakes
As you may know, you must have a financial sponsor when you apply. Your financial sponsor needs to meet a myriad of guidelines, and also complete his or her paperwork correctly. Check, double-check and triple-check everything. That green card depends on it.
4. Missing Forms
Forms, forms, forms. Oh SO MANY forms. Make sure you don’t miss ANY. And make sure you submit the RIGHT forms – the ones relevant to your application type. And while you’re at it, some of your forms may require translations. Those have to be handled in a certain way too. Submitting a birth certificate or a marriage certificate in another language just won’t fly.
5. Not Getting Help
You do want that green card right? After all, it’s important to you. Maybe you have family you need to be with, or you need to be able to travel in and out of the country for medical reasons, or you have a job. Or maybe you’re just trying to follow your American Dream. If you make even the tiniest mistake during the application process, you could lose that green card. Get help from an experienced immigration attorney. DON’T hire a “website”. Talk to an actual qualified attorney, someone who has time for you. DON’T hire a lawyer who doesn’t have solid immigration experience. And DON’T hire someone who isn’t a licensed lawyer, no matter how many people they claim to have helped and how many people they claim to know. The US immigration process is no joke. You will need an experienced guide.
